ANJA VAN HERLE

Born in Belgium in 1969, Anja’s early interest in fashion design led her to a career in arts. In 1987 she enrolled in Belgium’s prestigious Institute of Art and earned a Master of Fine Art in Painting. In 2003 Anja relocated to Los Angeles where she currently lives and works.

Her work embodies a European sense of style with American influences. Reflecting on the timeless elements of High Fashion, Anja Van Herle creates elegant, exquisite artwork that incorporates within both, contemporary and classic ideas of style, glamour, and femininity. Anja remains loyal to her figurative subject, female portraiture with idealized facial features; she is flawless, chic, and playful. The artist often frames them in oversized eyewear covered with Swarovski crystals. Eyewear plays a central symbolic role in her pieces, as Anja explains. If the eyes are the window to the soul, then glasses are more than just an accessory, they define personality. Van Herle is known for reintroducing a traditional representation of Fashion in her own artistic manner.

Anja’s work currently presented alongside Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Banksy, and Basquiat. Additionally, she’s shown with Shepard Fairey, Retna, Damien Hirst, Chuck Close, and Victoria’s Secret fashion photographer Russell James.
